Car Registraion Inspection
Driving an unregistered vehicle is a serious offence that can have far-reaching and catastrophic consequences. It’s a scary thought when you think about what could happen if your vehicle is unregistered.
Making sure cars are roadworthy is a big part of the registration system. It’s also about protecting people – every vehicle must be registered to be covered by compulsory third party insurance. This insurance makes sure that everyone is covered for personal injury if someone is hurt in a crash. Here’s the rundown on what the different roadworthiness inspections are, and how to make sure you’re covered at all times.
In NSW, you’ll need a roadworthy certificate, also known as a vehicle safety check or an eSafety pink slip, if your light vehicle (with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) under 4.5 tonnes) is over 5 years old and you’re looking to renew its registration. Coogee Auto is certified to issue roadworthy certificates for your light vehicle, motorbike, or trailer, which can be done up to 6 months before your registration runs out.
How to get a roadworthy certificate (pink slip)
To acquire a roadworthy certificate (pink slip) in NSW, you need to schedule an inspection at Coogee Auto, an Authorised Inspection Station (AIS). Should your vehicle not meet the roadworthy criteria on the initial check, you’re given 14 days to make the necessary fixes and submit your vehicle for a re-inspection. Once your vehicle is deemed roadworthy, we’ll file the certificate with the Roads and Maritime Services, facilitating your ability to renew your registration online, provided you’ve also secured your compulsory third-party insurance, known as a green slip.
How long does an inspection take?
At Coogee Auto, a roadworthy inspection typically takes between 2 to 4 hours. This comprehensive check aligns with NSW’s specific requirements and may involve your vehicle lifted on a car hoist, conducting a road test, and performing a thorough safety assessment. What if my car fails the inspection?
In the event that your vehicle passes, you’ll receive an electronic roadworthy certificate (eSafety pink slip). If it doesn’t, NSW regulations give you a period of 14 days to address any issues and have the vehicle re-inspected.
Blue Slip Inspections
At Coogee Auto, we conduct comprehensive Blue Slip Inspections to ensure the roadworthiness and regulatory compliance of unregistered vehicles. This includes vehicles with lapsed registration or those being evaluated prior to purchase.
Here’s what sets our Blue Slip Inspections apart from Pink Slip Inspections:
- A detailed vehicle identity check to accurately determine the vehicle’s legitimacy.
- An inspection for ‘written off’ status to detect and prevent the rebadging of stolen vehicles with identity plates from wrecked cars.
- A thorough design review to ensure the vehicle adheres to strict design and manufacturing regulations.
- Blue Slip Inspections are especially crucial for vehicles from outside NSW that need to be registered locally.
After completing a Blue Slip Inspection at Coogee Auto, we will provide you with the necessary paperwork. You’ll also receive additional forms that need to be filled out as part of the process to secure a green slip and finalise your vehicle registration through your preferred method, whether online, or at your local Motor Vehicle Registry.
